There is the divided consciousness, the sense of leading a double life, depending on how "normal" the writer appears to be, or tries to appear to be. People have said to me, "You wrote that? You look too normal." You should look different, is the implication, you should have four arms or glow in the dark, so we can tell you from the rest of us at a glance and not be fooled.

The writer's first affinity is not to a loyalty, a tradition, a morality, a religion, but to life itself, and to its representation in language. Nothing is taboo. The writer will go anywhere, say anything to get it said; in fact, the writer is bent on doing so. The writer is bent.

  1. Writing is the art of finding an experience that has made you suffer and turning it into passtime that will make thousands feel good.

  2. Well, I don't quite agree with that. I mean, sure, I've sometimes written to let the steam off and vent about stuff which had made me feel bad, but I try not to write about me. Yeah, there's a lot of my in everything I write (especially in my poetry), but that's not the point. I try to write about life. About human beings and how complicated their relationships are. I try to write about pain, and how there's hope after that hurting pain. I want to make people feel things when they read what I write. Damn, I want to feel what I write, even if it's something I'll never get to live. But thanks for your opinion anyway, I do appreciate it.

    I rest my case.
We can describe writing in a hundred thousand quotes, we'll never get half way through.
I'll never try to describe writing as an absolute, in one quote, "this is this" and that is that... There are millions of styles, of themes, or plots...
So you know, whenever I say "writing is" I mean "writing can be"

About never getting to live stuff... look at it my way, by writing it, you're living it. Or you can always fool people into believing it... "I'm an MI-5 agent! look, it's all in my book!"

    That's a good idea, though :).
